How do I choose a therapist?

Choosing the right therapist is important. Research has shown that the relationship is the most important factor in effective counselling. So choosing a therapist that you feel comfortable with and that you can trust is important. There are many different approaches offered by therapists, including Humanistic, CBT, Gestalt, and many others. There is also the integrative approach which uses a combination of different approaches.

What will happen in therapy?

During therapy you will be expected to talk about issues that you are experiencing and the therapist will aid exploration of your issues to provide you with a better understanding of your experiences. Together with the therapist, you will find how best to move forward.

How long will my therapy last for?

Most people have therapy for one 50 minute session per week. Therapy can be short term or long term, depending on your needs. Sometimes once the work has begun, we can get a clearer picture of how many sessions will be suitable.  If in therapy and you decide that it is the right time to leave, you can raise this with me and we can decide an ending date and work towards ending the therapy.

What happens if I miss a session?

I ask for a minimum of a 48 hour cancellation notice. If this is not made, I will charge the cost of the session. This is not only to protect the therapist, but also your commitment to the process of therapy.  I will also let you know if I am unable to make a session due to illness or holiday as soon as possible.

Will the therapist share any of my personal information?

Trust between client and therapist is crucial to the success of therapy and I treat all information shared in therapy as strictly confidential. This applies to all records made of your personal information. Where, in my professional opinion I believe there is a high risk of you seriously harming yourself or someone else, I may need to contact appropriate agencies. In this case I will inform you first if possible.

Why pay for private therapy?

Seeking therapy with the NHS may pose difficulties such as long waiting lists, limited sessions, lack of choice of therapist. By seeking private therapy you have a personal choice on how you would like your therapy to be and can suit it to your needs.
