What is Internal Family Systems Therapy?

If you have seen the film Inside Out (based on Internal Family Systems therapy), you will know something about IFS - that we are all made up of parts with different thoughts, opinions, behaviours and feelings.

You might be aware when different parts are in conflict- one part might want to try something new, whilst the other is scared and wants to avoid it. Or a part that wants to berate you for not finishing all your to-do list and another that wants to prioritise rest? Maybe you are also aware of a time when all of yourself (parts) seem aligned in one direction. If so, you are aware that you are made up of parts and that sometimes these parts can be conflicted!

The main therapeutic approach that I use with clients is Internal Family Systems Therapy (IFS) as I find this is often the most beneficial and effective form of therapy. It’s a transformative, evidenced-based therapy modality that engages the unconscious mind to access all different parts of ourselves and address the conflicts between them to bring about a more harmonious and balanced inner system.

IFS can be used for most psychotherapy presentations, but particularly for anxiety, OCD, depression and trauma. I find that it heals the root cause of the problem and can take us back in the past to where certain behaviours, thoughts, or feelings that bother us originate from so we heal it. However, it works differently from most talking therapies as we use the unconscious mind and the body to process and access these memories.

If you would like to find out more about IFS I have written a longer article here or would like to book a session, please contact me.
